MADISON — State fire marshals continue to investigate possible causes for the massive fire that destroyed more than half of a Madison apartment complex Saturday.
Sgt. Scott Richardson of the fire marshal’s service said investigators were trying to rule out potential causes and would continue interviewing tenants and witnesses in the coming days.
Richardson confirmed that the tenant in the apartment where the fire broke out had reported to firefighters that he had been smoking cigarettes in the unit shortly before the blaze. That tenant, who has not been named, also initially called the fire in.
He had lived in the apartment for approximately three years, according to landlord Virginia Weems.
