PORTLAND — More than 1,900 people attended the Great Portland Bike Swap today at the Sullivan Gymnasium at the University of Southern Maine.

Sponsored by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, the 10th annual event offered 565 bicycles for sale and found new homes for about two-thirds of them, said swap organizer Fred Robie of Freeport.

The coaltion makes at least a 15 percent commission on all bikes sold at the swap and uses the proceeds to support bicycle safety and advocacy efforts across Maine. Some people donate bikes without expecting anything in return, so the coaltion gets all of the money.

A final tally of the proceeds will take several days, Robie said.
