AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage has signed into law a bill aimed at keeping truckers off the road if they’ve taken methadone.

The bill, LD 966, he signed today prohibits the operation of a commercial motor vehicle by a person who has methadone in their body. Violation of the law, which takes effect in July 2012, will be a Class E crime.

LePage was joined at the bill signing by Lisa Ronan, whose husband, Shannon Ronan, was killed when his UPS truck was rear-ended by a large utility truck driven by an individual who was taking methadone. Shannon’s truck was forced into oncoming traffic and he was killed instantly.
