NEWPORT — Jailed the prior week for allegedly beating his girlfriend and heaving her out the front door, a Newport man faces new charges that he violated bail by allowing the victim back into his mobile home and possessed a switchblade knife, police said.

Philip J. Dumont, 30, of 33 New Road, also attempted to punch a responding officer and had to be restrained, police said.

Dumont remained held without bail Monday at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor. He’s scheduled to be in court Aug. 24.

Police said the first recent encounter with Dumont was about 8 a.m. July 29 when Lt. Randy Wing of the Newport Police Department responded to a domestic-violence call at Gilman’s Trailer Park. Wing arrested Dumont on a charge of domestic-violence assault after witnesses reported that he had punched and choked his girlfriend and then physically threw her out of the mobile home.

The unidentified 30-year-old woman was taken by ambulance to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield, where she was treated and released, Wing said.

A week later, Aug. 5, police began receiving calls about 3 p.m. from people who had been receiving text messages from the girlfriend “indicating that she was at his trailer again and he wouldn’t let her leave.”

Wing and officer Dana Gatcomb responded and conducted a bail search, finding the woman inside. She did not appear to be injured and she denied that Dumont had been forcing her to stay, Wing said.

Even so, Dumont wasn’t allowed to have the woman inside his mobile home as part of his bail conditions from the prior charge. During a search, police found Dumont was possessing a spring-assisted knife, another bail violation, and he was charged with trafficking in dangerous knives.

Dumont was also charged with refusing to submit to arrest when he took a swing at Wing, missed, and was forced to the ground and restrained, Wing said. The woman was taken home by a family member, he said.

Wing said Dumont has a lengthy criminal record that includes previous domestic-violence charges involving a different victim. According to published court records, Dumont was convicted in July 2009 of terrorizing, harassment by telephone and operating vehicle while under influence of intoxicants.
