AUGUSTA — The first Gold Star Family license plate numbers are due to be issued in Maine.
Secretary of State Charles Summers Jr. says numbers for the first license plates will be issued via random drawing today. Chips that will be drawn come from a Yarmouth company that donated special chips with numbers corresponding with each plate number from 1001-1999.
The plates are aimed at being a solemn, dignified tribute to families of those who have given their life in service to their country.
Maine had been one of only three states that did not issue these commemorative plates. Legislation passed this year authorized the plates.
So far, 45 applications for the Gold Star Family license plates have already been approved by the Bureau of Veterans’ Services.
