WAYNE — A Dixfield teen was killed early today when his car slammed into a tree on Main Street.
Dustin Osier, 18, died at the scene of the single-vehicle accident, said Capt. Daniel Davies of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department.
The crash occurred around 4:15 a.m., as Osier was driving his 2002 Saturn through Wayne toward Winthrop.
Osier was alone in the car, Davies said.
“He crossed over the center line and slammed into a tree,” Davies said.
Osier was not wearing a seat belt, but the impact of the crash and damage to the vehicle make it unlikely Osier would have survived had he been wearing a belt, Davies said.
“The vehicle hit the tree at just below 80 miles per hour,” he said.
Rescue workers found a child’s seat in the back of Osier’s car, which led to a brief search of the area to make sure a child had not been riding with Osier, Davies said.
Police believe Osier may have been heading to a job in Nobleboro, but investigators are unsure what Osier does for work.
“He had on muck boots,” Davies said. “We’re thinking he might be a clammer.”
Investigators are still trying to determine exactly how the crash occurred.
“Speed is the major factor,” Davies said. “We don’t know if there are any other underlying circumstances.”
This story was updated at 12:30 p.m., to correct information regarding the child seat.
