BAR HARBOR — A New Jersey family gets the distinction of having the 4 millionth passenger to use the Island Explorer bus that serves Acadia National Park.
While getting off the bus Friday at the park’s Sand Beach, the Sherlock family of Cherry Hill, N.J., learned they were the 4 millionth to ride the pollution-free, propane-driven bus. To mark the occasion, they were given a tote, a gift card from L.L. Bean and a gift membership in Friends of Acadia.
The Island Explorer, which also serves communities surrounding Acadia on Mount Desert Island, has eliminated nearly 1.4 million private motor vehicle trips and prevented emissions of 13,000 tons of greenhouse gases and more than 20 tons of smog-causing pollutants since its inception in 1999.
