PERU — The family of a Maine soldier killed in Afghanistan says it has met with Pentagon officials who briefed them on efforts to better screen Afghan Army recruits.
Pfc. Buddy McLain, of Peru, and five other soldiers in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division were killed last November by an Afghan recruit who turned his gun on his trainers.
McLain’s wife, parents and father-in-law met with officials at the Pentagon last week, accompanied by a representative of U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe’s office.
McLain’s father-in-law, Andy Freeman, told the Sun Journal of Lewiston that military officials informed the family about efforts the military has made to improve standards and policies on how the Afghan National Army is trained.
