NEWRY — In an early sign of the approaching ski season, a Maine ski area has begun firing its ski guns and is ready to blast more if the temperatures stay low.
With the overnight temperature dropping down to 28.4 degrees, Sunday River says it started its two-day pre-season snowmaking test early this morning, firing off 50 snow guns across a mountaintop trail. If it’s cold enough Friday, the resort will blast an additional 50 guns across a couple of more trails.
Last year, Sunday River opened on Oct. 24. Its opening day for the 2011-2012 season is still weather dependent.
