AUGUSTA — A public hearing on roadway improvements around Interstate 95’s exit 113 will continue Wednesday, Oct. 26 at Augusta City Center.
Ernie Martin, project manager for the Maine Department of Transportation, said the plan is to hold an open-house style meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. for individuals to meet one-on-one with departmental and other personnel.
That way they can have all their questions answered, he said.
About 100 people came to Tuesday night’s hearing, which was cut short by the illness of a participant just as a question period began.
At that meeting, people took closeup views of a large map taped to a gym wall showing the proposed design of roadwork planned for Old Belgrade Road, including the installation of two roundabouts.
Major work to be done includes reconfiguring the intersection of Old Belgrade Road and Route 27, with lesser work scheduled for the Old Belgrade Road intersections with Middle and Bog roads.
Martin said the session will be informal.
The department will send letters about the meeting to those whose property is close to the construction project, including those where the state will seek temporary construction rights and those who will lose property to the project.
The improvements to improve access on and off exit 113 are designed to ease traffic congestion at exit 112, Civic Center Drive and to provide a more direct route to the new regional hospital under construction by MaineGeneral Medical Center on Old Belgrade Road.
Martin said construction will be scheduled alongside that of the hospital, with the intent of completing it just before the hospital’s projected summer 2014 opening.
Road construction costs were estimated at $11 million, and the project has $10.8 million in funding.
