FAIRFIELD — Michaela Hinckley-Gordon scored two goals and added an assist to lead No. 8 Lawrence to a 4-1 victory against No. 9 Cony in an Eastern Maine Class A girls preliminary-round soccer game Saturday night.
Hinckley-Gordon scored both of her goals during the first half off rebounds and assisted on another by Faith Forsythe to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead at the break. Emily Quirion put the Rams on the scoreboard late in the game with an assist from Mia Diplock before Mindy Rowell scored an unassisted goal with 25 seconds remaining.
“I thought tonight we really came together as a team,” Lawrence coach Michael Hinckley-Gordon said. “It was probably our best effort all season long.”
Cony goalkeepers Melanie Guzman and Emily Quirion combined for 14 saves, while Lawrence’s Paige Belanger and Ashley Yahnel also combined for 14.
Cony closes at 8-7-0 while Lawrence (8-6-1) plays at No. 1 Bangor on Tuesday night.
Boys soccer
Fryeburg 9, Oak Hill 1: Three players scored two goals apiece to lead the No. 6 Raiders over No. 11 Oak Hill in a Western Maine Class B prelim.
Stefan Sjekloca, Paul Kurnick and Austin Ward each scored two goals while Milos Mijokov, Tyler Saunders and Lionel Rutabayiro scored single goals. Logan Gardner scored for Oak Hill with Trevor Samson assisting.
Pauk Dostie made three saves for Fryeburg (10-5-0), while Sam Morin had 10 for Oak Hill (3-12-0).
Football
Lewiston 62, Cony 49: Cony’s Brandon St. Michel scored five touchdowns Friday night in Lewiston. Jeff Turcotte rushed for five touchdowns for Lewiston.
“It was the most crazy thing I’ve ever been in,” Cony coach Robby Vachon said. “It was back and forth the whole night. It was 55-49 with 1:40 left, and we just missed an onside kick.”
St. Michel rushed for 131 yards and caught five passes for 113 yards. Cony quarterback Ben Lucas went 21 for 30 for 246 yards, throwing for one score and rushing for another. Thon Ithapalakorn rushed for a touchdown for the Rams, while Zack Lachance kicked 7 of 7 extra points.
Lewiston is 4-4, Cony is 1-7.
