PITTSTON — A Whitefield man is charged with drunk driving after crashing his Cadillac sport utility vehicle on Route 126 and knocking out power in the area.

Gregory Jacob Farris, 62, was charged with operating under the influence following the crash, which occurred shortly before 3 a.m., Saturday about two-tenths of a mile west of Jewett Road.

Capt. Daniel Davies of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office said Farris was driving his 2008 Cadillac Escalade east on Route 126 when he failed to make a turn and slammed into a mailbox before hitting a culvert. The SUV went airborne, hit another mailbox and struck a utility pole before spinning to a rest.

The impact knocked power lines onto the ground, taking out power throughout the area, Davies said.

Farris told police he swerved to avoid a deer, Davies said.

The crash caused about $5,000 damage to the utility pole and wires, Davies said, and about $7,000 damage to the Escalade.
