Bullies exist in the strangest places; even the Kennebec Journal’s editorial board! With but two days to respond, the board supports a return to last minute voter registration in Maine. Last minute editorial opinions give cover against citizen reply. Fairness gets kicked in the pants!
Not a single-word was written regarding the fact 42 states bar last minute voter registration. Why put Maine back in the minority? Why the silence?
You claim 70,000 possible, late registrations in the 2012 election should be protected by a late registration law. Then, 140,000 late registrations make it even more compelling. All of us registering late would jump you for joy.
You support last minute registration because we’ve had it for decades. Shame! Government in the rut.
You ask to be shown proof of fraud in last minute registration, before you’ll support change. Don’t you feel 42 states requiring early registration says something on the subject? Ever hear of haste making waste?
The last thing a powerful newspaper editorial should do is promote citizen foot-dragging to the polls. Forcing poll worker to do their important work “under the gun” is bullying them around.
Bullies hit from behind. Give little notice of a sucker punch! A last-minute editorial that piles on a one-sided position fits the bill.
