I was stunned recently to learn, thanks to M.D. Harmon, a retired journalist, that the denizens of Occupy Wall Street’s “Obamavilles” — read this carefully now — “would rather live on your income instead of earning their own by imitating your hard work, patient saving and investment.”

With respect to Harmon’s opinion, this is by a long shot the cruelest, single most insulting and callous statement I have ever read in the pages of the Kennebec Journal.

These deplorable denizens include teachers, nurses, police and fire personnel — and perhaps a journalist or two. People who may have lost their home, their job, their marriage — or their faith in a country that fewer and fewer recognize as ours anymore.

I was reminded recently of Andy Rooney’s belief that Thanksgiving is our best holiday. I readily agree. The only present is the presence of those you care about and love. I’d be ever so thankful and grateful this year if I could bring myself to truly believe that America will someday become whole again — and find its way home.
