WINSLOW — A Winslow man died late Friday after the car he was driving at a high rate of speed struck a tree on South Pond Road, according to police.

Daniel Clark, 19, was driving a 2003 Nissan 350Z two-door car north on South Pond Road when it crashed about a half mile from his home, said Officer Damon Lefferts.

“I believe he was actually headed home on South Pond Road and just lost control of the vehicle,” Lefferts said Saturday.

The accident was reported at 11:40 p.m.; Clark was alone in the car, he said.

The crash occurred about a mile from where South Pond Road intersects with China Road, according to Lefferts. The speed limit along that stretch of road is 40 mph. Police had not determined how fast Clark was going when the car left the road.

The Nissan was destroyed, he said.

A chaplain for the fire and police departments was at the scene late Friday, according to Lefferts.

Clark was a 2011 graduate of Mid-Maine Adult Community Education. Before that, he attended Winslow High School.

The school’s principal, Doug Carville, recalled Saturday that Clark played hockey during his school years.

“It’s a terrible tragedy, and my heart goes out to the family,” Carville said.
