STATESBORO, Ga. — The most successful season for Maine since 2002 came to an end Saturday when the Black Bears lost to third-seeded Georgia Southern 35-23 at Paulson Stadium in the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs.
The Black Bears, who tied for second in the Colonial Athletic Association, finished the season with a 9-4 mark. They won 11 games in 2002. GSU (11-2) advanced to the semifinals for the second straight year.

Maine trailed 14-0 after two possessions and played from behind the entire day. The Eagles’ triple-option offense piled up 476 yards, 360 on the ground.
Maine’s senior quarterback Warren Smith threw for two touchdowns and finished the season with 3,122 passing yards – the first Black Bear to throw for 3,000 yards in a season.
Roosevelt Boone returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown.
For the Eagles, quarterback Jaybo Shaw ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. Slotback J.J. Wilcox ran for two touchdowns.
