NORRIDGEWOCK — A woman was rushed to a hospital by helicopter Thursday afternoon after her car struck a driveway embankment.
Louise Wyman, 87, of North Anson, was driving east on U.S. Route 201A when she was apparently blinded by the sun, according to Deputy Wilfred Dodge of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
A driver in a car behind Wyman was also blinded by the sun and saw Wyman’s 2009 Chevrolet drift to the right. It struck the embankment of a driveway at 641 Madison Road around 1:30 p.m., Dodge said.
Initial reports said that Wyman was unconscious, but she was talking when rescue personnel arrived, he said.
She was taken by an ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan. From there, a LifeFlight helicopter took her to another hospital, though Dodge didn’t know where.
Dodge did not know the extent of Wyman’s injuries, but medical personnel radioed around 1:45 p.m. that she had sustained trauma to her chest.
“We just hope she makes out OK,” he said.
She had been wearing her seat belt. The airbag deployed and her car was totaled.
Deputy Jeremy Leal and the Norridgewock Fire Department also responded.
