AUGUSTA — Peter George Bathgate II will spend 45 years in prison for the murder of 47-year-old Paul A. Allen.

Bathgate pleaded guilty Friday in Kennebec County Superior Court to intentional and knowing murder and the 45-year sentence was recommended by both the state’s attorney and the defense attorney.

Bathgate, now 31, used a walking cane to stab Allen to death on Dec. 3, 2010, in a rural area of Hallowell, police said. Bathgate also hit Allen with his own truck.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office issued a report saying said Allen died of sharp force and blunt force trauma.

Allen’s smashed body was located on Dec. 5, 2010, and Bathgate was arrested Dec. 7, 2010, after police used tear gas to end a hours’-long standoff on Washington Street in Augusta.

Both Bathgate and Allen lived in Augusta. The killing resulted, according to police affidavits filed in court, following a dispute over a woman.

Authorities say Jessica Jones, the mother of Bathgate’s daughter, apparently had flirted with Allen, and Bathgate was jealous.

About three dozen people, watched Friday’s proceedings.

In contrast to Bathgate’s previous court appearance where he had longer curly hair and a beard and moustache, he had very closely shaved hair and no beard or moustache.

He sat next to his attorney, Kevin Sullivan.

The prosecutor, Assistant Attorney General Andew Benson, outlined the state’s evidence against Bathgate.

Justice Michaela Murphy did not impose the sentence immediately, instead taking a short break prior to hearing from people who knew Allen.
