FARMINGDALE β€” An informational meeting about the reconstruction of the lower end of Northern Avenue will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Town Office.

The town wants to eventually grind up the pavement on the lower end of Northern Avenue, replace all 15 catch basins from Maine Avenue to Sheldon Street, replace the culverts on that portion of the street and replace the sidewalks and include new curbs.

Residents who will be affected by the work have already been notified by mail and town officials said they are seeking input.

At the special town meeting in December, residents approved spending up to $34,000 to have the engineering work done. Wright-Pierce Architect had the low bid of $12,000 and worked with the Farmingdale Road Advisory Committee in drawing up plans.

Initially, the committee suggested constructing a sidewalk on the south side of the street so it would be level with the road and easier to plow, said Board of Selectmen Chairman David Sirois.

At the suggestion of Wright-Pierce, town officials are now looking at building a raised sidewalk on the north side of the street, from Maine Avenue to Sheldon Street. Traffic is slower going uphill and pedestrians will feel more secure with a curb in place, officials said.

β€œIt’s a safety issue,” Sirois said.

Selectmen want to put the job out to bid and get everything in line because they will be seeking approval to bond the project at the annual Town Meeting in June.
