AUGUSTA — Violet Marylove Burns, her blond hair covered by a pink and blue striped knitted cap, peered at the world from the arms of her father.

Violet pursed her lips, yawned a little and drew big smiles from Travis Burns, her dad, and Samantha Bailey, her mom.

Born at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, Violet is a leap year baby. Her birthday will be every four years, when Feb. 29 comes around.

“I just think it’s too cool,” Bailey said. “You’re forever young when you’re a leap year baby.”

Bailey, who turned 29 Monday, said she’s leaning toward celebrating Violet’s birthday each year in February.

Burns, however, might prefer March. The Pittston family is still debating.

“She’s been a pretty good sleeper. She’s so good,” Bailey said.

Violet was visited by her sister Finley, 2, and was soon to also meet brothers Elijah and Devan.

And Violet is eligible to join the Honor Society of Leap Year Babies, a group that claims 10,000 members.

On Wednesday, the group’s website, http://leapyearday.com/feb29/home, carried the reminder that “Today is our birthday!”

The chances of being born on Feb. 29 are 1 in 1,461, but it appears some babies here are taking a shot at beating the odds.

In the northern end of Kennebec County, three babies were born on Wednesday at MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Waterville campus and one was born at Inland Hospital, also in Waterville.
