PORTLAND — The Coast Guard is warning boaters that while it’s getting warmer outside, the ocean remains deadly cold.
The warm weather will tempt boaters this week, and the Coast Guard says boaters need to be aware of the dangers associated with spring-like weather and winter-like water temperatures.
Lt. Garrett Meyer of the Coast Guard in Boston says hypothermia can set in quickly because the water temperature is still in the 40s off the New England coast.
He says boaters need to be sure their boats are in good order and that proper lifesaving equipment is on board. He says paddlers need to be prepared as well.
