I have experienced two incidents that confirm to me that many people care.

Last Thanksgiving, after returning from the Turkey Farm in Mercer with a load of turkeys, I stopped at the Sunset Grill in Belgrade Lakes. The daily special was roast turkey, which was appropriate for the season.

I started eating and quickly was in distress; I was choking. Tom Bennett, of Belgrade, came to my rescue. After several Heimlich maneuvers, I was saved. At that time, I was recovering from neck cancer, and with my narrow throat, turkey was a poor choice.

The second incident was less heroic, but is also noteworthy. Last fall, I bought a car from Central Maine Motors. Last week, owner Chris Gaunce called to tell me that a technician, Zach Jurdak, had found $500 in the car I had traded in. Zach could have easily kept the money.

These two men are examples of the goodness in people.
