AUGUSTA — The Maine House today sustained Gov. Paul LePage’s veto of a bill that would have required financial institutions to provide original documents in foreclosure proceedings.

The vote failed to reach the two-thirds necessary for an override. The vote was 69-69.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Roberta Beavers, D-South Berwick, said it was designed to help people facing foreclosure by allowing them to request original documents. It was in response to mass foreclosures that contributed to the 2008 economic downturn.

“This bill will weed out bad actors,” she said.

This is LePage’s 16th veto of the two-year legislative session. All have been sustained by the Legislature.
