WATERVILLE — Police are investigating an early morning burglary that occurred today at College Quik Stop on West River Road.
Detective Sgt. Michael Benecke said it appeared someone smashed out the glass in the front door sometime between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m., ripped the cash register off the counter and fled the scene.
“They took the whole register,” Benecke said.
At least two people were involved in the burglary, Benecke said just before 10 a.m..
“At this point, we don’t have any definitive suspects yet, but it’s still very early in the investigation,” he said.
The amount of money in the cash register was “very insignificant,” according to Benecke.
Damage to the glass door, however, was not.
“Since it was safety glass, it will not be an inexpensive repair, by any means,” Benecke said.
Police were alerted to the burglary shortly after it occurred, he said. Sgt. Daniel Ames and officers Jason Longley and Alden Weigelt responded to the scene.
Benecke asked that anyone who may have been in the area early Wednesday and seen or heard anything to call police at 680-4700 or send an e-mail to the Police Department’s website, watervillepolice.org. The tip will remain anonymous, he said.
Detective Chris Paradis is the primary investigator in the case he said.
It is uncertain whether the burglary is related to a similar one that occurred Tuesday morning at Dunkin’ Donuts on College Avenue.
“It’s too early in both investigations to determine that, one way or the other,” Benecke said.
In the College Avenue incident, a couple of burglars used a rock to smash a window at the business, Deputy police Chief Charles Rumsey said Tuesday.
A woman entered the store, removed a cash drawer and passed it to an accomplice through the broken window before escaping on foot toward Main Street.
Surveillance video from the store shows the burglary lasted less than two-minutes, Rumsey said. He wouldn’t say how much money was stolen.
