WINSLOW — A 15-year-old Winslow girl was summoned on two charges after she crashed a friend’s car into a parked truck and fled the scene, police said.
The girl, whose name was not released because she is a minor, was driving a borrowed 1999 Subaru Forester with a 15-year-old female passenger at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on Monument Street when she pulled into a parking lot at St. John Regional Catholic School to talk to two men who were parked there, according to police Chief Jeff Fenlason.
“Because she’s not overly experienced (at driving), she slammed into the back of their truck,” he said.
Next, the underage driver “took off at a high rate of speed and drove over a curb,” Fenlason said.
No one was injured, but both vehicles sustained minor damage.
The owner of the truck, 19-year-old Brian Robbins, provided police with contact information for the driver, whom he described as a friend. She was found later that evening in Waterville.
When questioned by police, the driver initially claimed she had stolen the car, but later said she borrowed the car from the passenger’s mother in Waterville.
“When we talked to the friend’s mother she said, ‘Yeah, I gave her permission, but she told me she was 17 years old and had a license,'” Fenlason said.
The driver was summoned on charges of operating without a license and failure to notify police of an accident. Both charges are misdemeanors and each carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and $1,000 in fines.
