AUGUSTA— A Water Street pharmacy was evacuated Sunday after fire ignited in a trash can and spread to the store.

Nobody was injured in the fire, which started around 4:45 p.m., in a trash can outside Walgreens at 403 Water Street, but the store was evacuated for several minutes until firefighters doused the flames, said Augusta Fire Battalion Chief Daniel Guimond.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire, Guimond said.

The fire started in a trash can outside the store. Firefighters arrived to find a sizable ball of fire coming from the trash can, which was made of fiberglass.

Flames spread from the can to the store’s siding, Guimond said. He was unsure of what material the siding was made.

The fire was near a couple of propane tanks, Guimond said.

“There was concern about the fire spreading to the tanks,” he said.

The fire was out within a few minutes of firefighters’ arrival.

A report estimated the fire caused less than $1,000 damage to the store.
