When my wife asked me Sunday morning if our power was being shut off, I had to get up from my coffee and paper to see what the commotion was in front of my house.
To my surprise, a horde of city employees and volunteers were installing American flags on every other pole along Route 201. What a wonderful sight.
I had to drive out to Marston Road and back down the avenue to the downtown just to admire them. Downtown I saw Jim Keenan of Farmingdale assisting in the flag raisings, and city officials told me that Keenan was the driving force behind the initiative.
My thanks goes out to Keenan, all the city employees, volunteers and those businesses and individuals who donated funds to make this happen. The good news is it’s not over. I understand about 75 flags are going up and permits are in place for up to 200, if enough money is donated to complete this effort.
