I found out this past week that fireworks were legal in my town of Fairfield. Since the new state law went into effect legalizing fireworks, most cities have banned them, but nothing has been reported on smaller towns.
Over the past few weeks, my friend and I have heard fireworks being set off and wondered what was going on, so I went to see my town manager and he said they were legal.
I am no fan of fireworks. Fireworks for a celebration like the fourth of July are fine, but if you need to see fireworks on a regular basis or have the need to watch explosions then maybe psychological counseling might be in order.
Back many years ago, we rightly banned fireworks because of the inherent dangers, including fire danger, violation of noise ordinances, and human and animal injuries. It’s just silly to allow anyone over the age of 18 to buy explosives. Yet today my town council has dismissed all that and said it is OK to buy and explode them.
I cannot see anything good coming from this decision, and I am disturbed that a town council that is supposed to work on my behalf has taken this stance.
I am waiting to read the articles yet to be written about fires, injuries and noise complaints because of these fireworks.
