Linda Lincoln, left, and Maine Forest Service District Forester Morten Moesswilde, center, help third-grader Chris Wilcox count the needles to determine what kind of tree they are examining during an event for Carrie Ricker School students at Smithfield Plantation nature area on Thursday in Litchfield. It had five needles per bundle, so Moesswilde told them it was an White Pine. About 90 students learned about trees, insects, environmental electricity and also got to dissect an owl pellet.
