AUGUSTA — Maine’s first lady is getting her hands dirty to teach students about healthy living and eating locally grown foods.
Ann LePage, the wife of Gov. Paul LePage, and Agriculture Commissioner Walt Whitcomb are meeting with 10 sixth-grade students from Augusta’s Farrington Elementary School on Wednesday at the Blaine House in Augusta.
Students will plant a batch of winter squash that will be donated to a local food pantry after it’s harvested. They’ll also sample snacks made with fresh vegetables prepared by Blaine House chef Chris Hart and chef and cookbook author Cynthia Symonds.
Whitcomb says having a hands-on opportunity to plant seeds and harvest vegetables teaches students about science, biology and good nutrition while generating a lifelong appreciation for eating local foods.
