AUGUSTA — A Monmouth man was ordered Wednesday to serve 30 months in prison for a series of thefts and a burglary earlier this year that netted him $24,557 in cash and valuables.
Scott D. Smith, 27, pleaded guilty in Kennebec County Superior Court to burglarizing a Monmouth home Feb. 28 and stealing two safes from it filled with coins and other valuables.
The homeowner valued the items at $17,092, Assistant District Attorney Brad Grant told the judge.
Grant said one safe and some coins were found on a bus on the property of one of Smith’s relatives. Some stolen coins also later turned up at an Auburn jewelry store, Grant said.
Smith also pleaded guilty to a theft charge in connection with his use of a Readfield woman’s credit card in January and February to run up more than $6,800 in charges.
He also pleaded guilty to two counts of negotiating a worthless instrument — one on Dec. 31, 2011, in Readfield; and one on Dec. 16, 2011, in Chesterville.
Justice Michaela Murphy imposed a sentence of six years in prison, with all but 30 months suspended, and three years of probation; and she ordered Smith to pay $24,557 restitution.
Smith was on probation when the offenses occurred.
