On page B2 of the June 2 Morning Sentinel was an article about fund-raising for gay marriage. The article stated that Mainers United for Marriage has collected $465,559 so far this year to support gay marriage in Maine.

I think this money should be put to better use. I mean, Mainers already have voted against gay marriage in Maine. If it is defeated again in November, I would like to see at least a five-year waiting period before it can go back on the ballot.

I believe marriage is one man to one woman. Notwithstanding my beliefs, or maybe because of them, I have some examples of what I think would be better uses of that $465,559:

* MaineCare could use the money so that Mainers who honestly and truly need the help this program provides have it available to them.

* Department of Health and Human Services can always use a donation toward covering the expenses of the much-needed TANF and food stamp program in Maine.

* I almost always see my financial institution selling candy bars to “end hunger in Maine.” I wish I had $465,559 to donate to the Mainers out there who do not know where their next meal is coming from.

* A few years ago, I volunteered my time to the Alfond Center in Waterville. The money would really help its much-needed after-school programs. Kids first, right?

I could list other better uses of the money, but I believe my point has been made. Maybe Mainers United for Marriage could realize there are better uses for the money they have raised.
