Summer has come in with bang in Maine.
Portland reached 93 degrees, tying the record high set in 1964, while temperatures soared to a record of 90 degrees in Houlton.
The heat is expected to continue with higher temperatures on Thursday.
“Right now we have high pressure in control,” said Chris Legro of the National Weather Service. “It’s been sitting over the midsection of the country baking the last couple of days and now it’s starting to shift east, letting that warm air invade our area.”
The humidity is making temperatures feel even warmer than they are, with a heat index value of 100 degrees.
“We’ve got a pretty moist air mass in place as well. That works the opposite of wind chill,” Legro said. “It’s actually feeling hotter than it is.”
Westerly breezes also are keeping the sea breeze at bay, leading to warmer temperatures along the coast.
