LEWISTON — Maine will have dozens of new citizens this Independence Day.

One of more than 20 naturalization ceremonies held last month around the country as part of Flag Day festivities took place at Lewiston Middle School, where 52 people from 23 countries were sworn in as U.S. citizens.

U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services says ceremonies were held in more than 20 communities from Mystic, Conn., to Dutch Harbor, Alaska.

In Maine, those who were sworn in lived came from countries ranging from Argentina, Bulgaria and China to Iraq, Poland and Somalia.
