PORTLAND — A woman accused of robbing a South Portland TD Bank made her first appearance in the case today.
Jamilee Kus, 28, of Waterville, faces charges of robbery and theft in connection with the incident that took place Thursday near the Maine Mall. She was with her two children, a friend and her boyfriend in a vehicle when she was arrested early Sunday on the Maine Turnpike in Scarborough.
Kus went into the bank with her hand in her pocket as though she had a gun and told employees she was not playing, Assistant District Attorney Tracy Leadbetter said during the hearing. Kus was given close to $2,000 by two tellers, the prosecutor said.
Latex gloves like those used in the robbery were found in the vehicle Kus was in at the time of the arrest, Leadbetter said. No weapon was found.
Leadbetter asked that bail be set at $100,000 surety or $50,000 cash while Luke Rioux, the lawyer appointed to represent Kus for the day, asked for bail in the range of $1,500 to $2,500, along with a pre-trail bail service agreement through a nonprofit agency.
Superior Court Justice William Broderick set bail at $5,000 cash with a pre-trial contract.
Kus has lived in Maine her entire life and has had a booth at a hair salon for about six years, Rioux told the judge.
Kus did not enter a plea today during her initial appearance.
Kus tried to shield her face from a news camera with her hands and by hanging her head low while waiting for her turn in court.
Her next court date was set for Sept. 9.
