WINTHROP — Police on Monday continued to seek answers explaining what caused a fatal crash last week that left a local mother dead and another man injured.

Winthrop police Capt. Ryan Frost said Monday that investigators still are trying to determine why Rosemaire Lola, 44, of Winthrop, steered her 2002 Chevrolet Blazer into the path of a tanker truck just after 2 p.m. Friday.

Lola initially was reported by police as living in North Monmouth. She had a mailing address there, but Winthrop has since been confirmed as her community of residence.

After the accident, the truck driver, George Savage, 74, of Sidney, was taken to the hospital. An update of his condition was unavailable Monday.

The crash occurred near the East Winthrop Post Office on U.S. Route 202. Officer John Hall of the Winthrop Police Department said after the crash that Lola was driving west when she crossed the center line and hit the tanker truck, which is owned by Pat Jackson/TriCity Septic Tank Service in Augusta.

Neither the company owner, Pauline Dube, nor Lola’s family members could be reached for comment Monday.

Both vehicles were destroyed in the accident, which halted traffic on the road and forced police and firefighters to detour motorists around the scene for about four hours.

According to her obituary, Lola lived on U.S. Route 202 in Winthrop and was born in Portland. Survivors included a husband, son and two daughters.

Visiting hours were scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Roberts Funeral Home at 62 Bowdoin St. in Winthrop.
