MADISON — Two people were hospitalized Monday morning after a car and a van collided on U.S. Route 201, pushing both vehicles into golf carts parked at Lakewood Golf Course.
The injuries were minor, police said. No golfers were injured.
“The car was coming down Golf Course Road and was coming across (U.S.) 201, and out of the corner of my eye I could see a vehicle coming and I could see it was going to crash,” said Lakewood manager Peter Freyer. “They plowed into rental carts we had out here from a tournament we had this weekend.”
Louis Arsenault, 79, of Norridgewock, was driving a 2003 Buick Century on Golf Course Road and attempted to cross U.S. 201 to Lakewood, said Sgt. David Trask of the Madison Police Department. The car was struck on the passenger side by a full-size Ford van, which was traveling north, he said.
Arsenault suffered a cut on his head, possibly from flying glass, and some soreness from the impact of the crash. He was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan for observation. Arsenault was wearing a seat belt, Trask said.
The van driver, Brent Boyington, 61, was not injured. Boyington’s wife, Mercer, 63, suffered facial injuries and was taken to the hospital. She was in the back seat and was not wearing a seat belt, Trask said.
In all, 11 golf carts were damaged in the crash, Trask said. The street sign for Theater Road and an attached stop sign were flattened in the crash. Both vehicles were heavily damaged.
Trask said it was too early to determine if charges will be filed in the accident. He said Arsenault may not have yielded properly entering the busy road and Boyington may have been exceeding the 45 mph speed limit coming through Lakewood.
Lakewood is an 18-hole golf course where the club house and parking lot are on the east side of U.S 201 and the links are on the west side. Freyer said the accident is a reminder to patrons and to motorists be careful.
“The only message is to slow down and be careful of the golfers and pedestrians in the area,” he said. “And we try to remind everybody to be careful crossing the road.”
