SANFORD — U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree this morning visited the site of a new community health center that will serve York County.

The new York County Community Health Center, expected to open in January, will triple the number of people who can be seen at the facility, according to York County Community Action Executive Director Barbara Crider. The center currently targets homeless and public housing populations, but the new facility will be open to the entire community.

The new facility is expected to serve 6,000 patients a year and create 21 full-time jobs.

Pingree had worked with local officials to secure a $600,000 grant under the health care reform law to help fund the new health center.

“Today in Maine there are far too many who don’t have health care coverage. But just because you don’t have health care coverage doesn’t mean you don’t get sick,” Pingree said in a prepared statement. “Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, thousands of Sanford area families will have access to health care.”

Crider said the new facility will open access to families who need medical, dental and behavioral health care.

“It’s going to have a big impact on their lives and on the community,” she said.

Pingree is married to S. Donald Sussman, majority share owner of The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram.
