I just came from the grand opening of the Skowhegan Grist Mill in downtown Skowhegan. It was an exciting affair with lots of people and lots of excitement for the prospects for the grist mill and associated businesses.

As a county commissioner, I was against the sale of the old jail for two reasons: one, because I didn’t think we commissioners were asking enough money, and two, because we needed storage for vital records, and the old jail had lots of space.

Now I can see that I was wrong. We commissioners would never have made that property as beautiful as it stands today.

Amber Lambke and Mike Scholz and their group have done a wonderful job. They have taken that outdated, rundown white elephant and turned it into an elegant, stately cornerstone of Skowhegan’s downtown revitalization.

Job well done. Lambke is absolutely right when she said, “We are what we have been waiting for.”
