EAST MONMOUTH — The body of a Lewiston area believed murdered Tuesday in Greene was found by police Friday afternoon just below the Martin R. Hovey Memorial Dam in Jug Stream, between Annabessacook and Cobbossee lakes.

Police recovered the body of a 20-year-old Romeo Parent, a transient who lived in the Lewiston and Auburn area, just hours after charging a Lewiston man in connection with killing Parent.

Maine State Police said in a news release Friday that Michael McNaughton, 23, was charged with murder that morning and that the two men knew each other. McNaughton was arrested at the Lewiston Police Department and was being held at the Androscoggin County Jail.

Parent was killed earlier in the week, police said.

“Detectives think Parent was killed in Greene late Tuesday afternoon and his body was dumped into the stream in Monmouth, along Route 135 on Wednesday,” according to the release.

Authorities initially could not find Parent’s body and spent the day searching at several locations. The search involved state police troopers, Androscoggin deputies, the Maine Warden Service, and Lewiston and Auburn police.

Among the locations searched was a large tract of land in Greene and some water locations. Parent’s body was recovered in Jug Stream in less than 10 feet of water after being found by state police dogs, according to the release.

Members of the department’s dive team aided the recovery of the body, which was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta for an autopsy Saturday.
