VASSALBORO — The former town-contracted mower and the manager of Vassalboro’s transfer station spoke about their dissatisfaction with the work of a newly contracted mower during the Vassalboro selectman’s meeting Thursday night.
Earl Vannah of Vannah Yard Care, former town mower, and George Hamar, transfer station manager, said the grass at the cemetery and the transfer station was cut only once in May. Teague Adams of A&H Properties was contracted to mow weekly, according to Town Manager Mary Sabins.
Vannah said the transfer station was not mowed enough last month.
“The grass in some areas was a foot tall,” he said.
According to Adams, mowing in May was reduced because it was a particularly wet month and he had reservations about damaging the turf with heavy mowing machinery.
Selectman Philip Haines said that while people are quick to call if the cemetery isn’t properly cared for, he had not heard any complaints about the mowing.
Sabins said more attention to mowing is needed at the transfer station and that she would talk with Adams about the contract conditions.
