AUGUSTA — Old Fort Western, the 1754 National Landmark fort, store and house on the Kennebec River, will host several area re-enactment groups Saturday, Aug. 3, and Sunday, Aug. 4. Those interested can experience what the life of a soldier was like during the French and Indian War.
Hear the muskets and cannons firing and learn to march with the soldiers. See the sentries guarding the fort, watch the blacksmith making nails, see the bateau men rowing the cargo boat on the Kennebec River and smell the soldier’s rations cooking over an open fire. This is an opportunity to interact with the soldiers of both garrison and marching scouting companies.
The fort will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. both days. On Saturday, Aug. 3, be sure to check out Augustafest, which will be going on downtown. As part of Augustafest, fort admission will be half price that day.
