WINSLOW — Two men with handguns robbed the China Road branch of Bangor Savings Bank this morning, ordering everyone in the bank down on the floor and fleeing on foot with cash.

No employees or customers were injured in the robbery at the 78 China Road bank, Sgt. Haley Fleming of the Winslow Police Department said.

Both men were wearing heavily stained painting coveralls and wearing sunglasses.

One was between 50 and 60 years old, around 250 pounds, with a thick gray handlebar mustache, and the other was between 20 and 30 years old, taller, with a slight accent and a bandana covering the lower part of his face, he said.

Fleming said interviews with bank employees were inconclusive about what kind of accent the man had, Fleming said.

The men entered the building at 11:13 a.m., drew their guns and ordered everyone onto the floor, Fleming said. A call went out to Winslow police at 11:16 a.m., and police arrived within a minute.

A Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office dog was used to try to track down the robbers, but with no luck.

About 200 yards of China Road in front of the bank was closed for nearly three hours after the robbery while police investigated. Traffic resumed around 2 p.m.

Bangor Savings Bank spokesman Yellow Light Breen said that all bank employees are instructed on what to do to make sure nothing escalates.

Winslow police are leading the investigation, while Maine State Police and the Waterville Police Department assisting with evidence collection.

It’s the third bank robbery in the area in the past year.

In December, a Franklin Savings Bank in Skowhegan was robbed by a man who said he had an accomplice with a rifle outside. The case remains under investigation.

In August, a Camden National Bank branch in Bingham was robbed. Paul Robinson of Waterville was arrested the next day and later sentenced to prison.

Fleming asked that anyone with information about the robbery to call Winslow Police Department at 872-5215.
