SOUTH PORTLAND — South Portland is the latest Maine municipality to be designated as “business-friendly” by the state.

The Department of Economic and Community Development this week awarded the city with a certificate and road signs to tout its award. South Portland applied for the designation last year but didn’t make the cut.

Twenty-four Maine towns and cities have earned the designation since the program was launched last year.

Communities are evaluated on whether they have a business-friendly approach in terms of things like customer service, licensing and permitting, business involvement and collaboration.
