NORTH ANSON — A Bikes for Books assembly, sponsored by the Masons from Northern Star Lodge 28, was held recently at the Garret Schenck Elementary School. This program encourages students to read as many books as they can for chances to win a new bicycle. The Masons got donations from area businesses to donate a bicycle, helmet and a T-shirt to a boy and a girl in grades K-5. A total of 11 bicycles were awarded to the group of students, according to a press release.
Deputy Michael Pike and Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department organized a bicycle safety lesson for all the students before the names were drawn. “We are extremely pleased to be part of such a good program,” said Chief Deputy Lancaster in the release.
The Masons started the program by coming to the school in April. The students had two months to read books and put their names in a drawing. The school has approximately 70 students and they read a total of 815 books.
Masons Dan Hill, David Adams and Dana Hall presented the students with the new bikes. The Masons also sponsor the same program at the Carrabec Community School, in North Anson, as well as the Civics Club at the Carrabec High School.
