Sheriffs’ deputies in Knox and Waldo counties are searching for an inmate who escaped from the Maine Coastal Regional Re-enter Center in Belfast on Thursday night.
Tyler Malmstrom, 23, left the center’s recreation yard without permission just before 9 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from Waldo County Sheriff Scott Story.
The sheriffs’ offices do not believe that Malmstrom, who was in jail for aggravated assault, is armed or dangerous.
He left a note to the counties’ staff, the courts and his family apologizing for his actions, the news release said.
Malmstrom was recently admitted to the re-entry center to finish the last five months of his sentence for an assault during a bar fight in Knox County.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about Malmstrom’s whereabouts to contact the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office at 338-6786 or the Knox County Sheriff’s Office at 594-0429.
They describe him as a 170-pound, 5-foot 8-inch white man with brown hair and blue eyes.
