WINSLOW — A 23-year-old man who police say has an extensive criminal history was arrested Wednesday night and charged in connection with the theft of personal property from several cars in the town earlier that day.
Zachary J. Morin, 23, of First Street, was arrested on several charges, including receiving stolen property and possession of marijuana, according to a release from the Winslow Police Department.
The break-ins were reported on Wednesday morning, mostly in the vicinity of Benton Avenue and Danielson, Stobie and First streets. At least five vehicles had been burglarized with items ranging from spare change to a GPS unit reported stolen, police said.
Morin, who “is known to the Winslow Police Department due to his extensive criminal history,” according to police, was spotted at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night in the vicinity of Barton Street by officer Brandon Lund. After a warrant check, police discovered that Morin was wanted for failing to appear in court, according to the release. While Morin was being searched, officers found some of the property that was reported stolen from one of the victim’s cars along with marijuana and hypodermic needles.
Police charged Morin with receiving stolen property, violating bail conditions, possession of marijuana and failing to appear in court. He was taken to Kennebec County Jail Wednesday night.
Morin was previously convicted of unlawful possession of a scheduled drug in May 2013 and served a 45-day jail sentence. Morin also had several charges of the sale or use of drug paraphernalia and of receiving stolen property in 2012.
In June of 2011, Morin was found in an alternative education school auditorium saying someone was chasing him with a gun. He later said he had taken bath salts, a street name for a synthetic drug.
