YORK — Federal officials might decide this coming week if a $78,000 bid is enough to hand over ownership of New England’s tallest lighthouse.
An unnamed bidder made the offer for the 133-foot Boon Island Light Station off of York. A spokeswoman says General Services Administration Real Property Zone One Director John Kelly could make a ruling this week about whether the bid is enough for the 1855-built lighthouse.
The federal government will execute the deed within 60 days of the award if Kelly accepts it. Officials say the government will identify the top bidder if the deal goes though.
More than a dozen bidders vied for the lighthouse. It is located on a tiny, rocky island 6 miles off Maine’s coast.
