WATERVILLE — Spring Street traffic was rerouted briefly Friday afternoon after a flaming couch was dragged onto the road.

Around 4 p.m., a resident near the intersection of Silver Street and Spring Street dragged the burning couch to the road because he wanted to get the fire out of a garage under his residence.

The stretch of Spring Street from Elm to Silver street was closed briefly while fire crews extinguished the couch fire and shoveled the ash off the road.

Detective Sgt. William Bonney said the home’s occupant told him that he had thrown out some burned paper near the couch and didn’t realize the paper wasn’t fully extinguished. The fire then spread to the couch, Bonney said, and when the man saw it, he dragged it out of the garage and onto the road to get the fire out of his home.

Waterville firefighters arrived soon after the fire was reported. While the fire was extinguished quickly, the couch was destroyed, reduced to nothing more than ash and a frame.

The resident declined to identify himself to the newspaper.
