I saw our political future while sitting at the light on Main Street in Waterville Friday morning, while waiting to cross the bridge to Winslow. It was a sign in the shape of an American flag with the legend “Thank God for corporations for giving us candidates.” Someone apparently knows God is a political entity and is concerned about our elections.

I’m not sure of that person’s religious affiliation, but as a veteran and a loyal American, I was offended by what I considered the desecration of our flag. In place of stars on the blue field were corporate logos. In other words, in the future, unless you work for a corporation and vote the way the corporations wants, you will not be allowed to vote.

There was no attribution I could find on the sign. I guess that’s only necessary on newspaper, radio and TV ads. The future as depicted in the novel “1984” did not happen in 1984, but perhaps it was just ahead of it’s time.
